Integrated Building Design

Making better, more sustainable buildings takes more than energy efficient light bulbs. Learn about key areas of our building's design.

Walls - Insulated Concrete Forms

Most of the science center walls are made of concrete and foam insulation instead of wood "stick and frame." Making a building out of these "insulated concrete form" walls offers several benefits. First, they hold heat or cold in far better than typically constructed walls. Second, they are simple to construct, and third, they are durable- being highly rot, pest and moisture resistant.  They also work well together with the rest of the concrete mass in the building to prevent wide temperature swings during the day or night, reducing heating and cooling costs.
